Marinated Feta Cheese

Jump to Recipe

Transform a block of feta cheese with this easy marinated feta recipe. It’s the ultimate effortless upgrade for your next snack board, salad, sandwich.

If you are looking for a foolproof way to elevate your everyday cheese game, this marinated feta is your new best friend. By taking a simple block of feta cheese and bathing it in a vibrant, herby oil infused with garlic, lemon, and a kick of spice, you get something that tastes like it came straight from a gourmet Mediterranean market. It’s the kind of low-effort, high-reward recipe that feels fancy enough for entertaining guests, yet completely approachable for a cozy weeknight snack.

Best of all, it comes together in just 15 minutes. As it sits, the olive oil absorbs all those aromatic garlic and herb notes, creating a rich marinade that doubles as a delicious dressing or dipping oil when you’re done with the cheese. Serve it up with warm toasted bread, crisp crackers, or tossed right into your favorite salads for an instant pop of flavor.

Ingredients for marinated feta cheese

This recipe relies on simple, everyday ingredients like quality olive oil, fresh garlic, and bright citrus zest to turn basic feta into flavor-packed cheese.

Ingredients for marinaded feta
  • Feta cheese
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Garlic
  • Fresh thyme
  • Fresh parsley
  • Lemon juice
  • Lemon zest
  • Dried oregano
  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Black pepper

See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions

  1. Pat the feta dry and cut it into bite-sized cubes. Place it in a clean jar or airtight container.
  1. Combine the olive oil, garlic, thyme sprigs, parsley, lemon juice, lemon zest, dried oregano, cred pepper flakes if using, and black pepper in a small bowl and stir to mix.
  1. Pour the marinade over the feta and gently turn the pieces so they are coated well. Make sure the feta is mostly covered by the oil.
  1. Cover the container and chill in the fridge for at least an hour before serving (overnight is better). Turn the container gently once or twice during that time so the herbs and garlic stay evenly distributed.

Variations

  • Swap the thyme sprigs for fresh dill or a little rosemary for a completely different flavor profile.
  • Use orange zest instead of lemon zest if you prefer a softer, sweeter citrus note.
  • Leave out the crushed red pepper flakes entirely if you want a milder, kid-friendly version.

Equipment

  • Cutting board and knife
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Measuring spoons
  • Clean jar or airtight container

Storage

Store the marinated feta in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Because olive oil naturally firms up when chilled, let the container sit at room temperature for about 20 to 30 minutes before serving so the oil can loosen back up.

Top Tip

Always use a block of feta rather than pre-crumbled cheese. Block feta holds its shape much better when cubed, looks cleaner on a serving platter, and keeps the oil from getting cloudy with loose cheese crumbs.

FAQ

Can I use regular vegetable oil instead of extra virgin olive oil?

Because the oil acts as both a preservative and a major flavor component, you’ll want to use a good-quality extra virgin olive oil that you actually enjoy the taste of.

What is the best way to serve marinated feta?

It is incredibly versatile! Serve it alongside toasted bread, crunchy crackers, roasted vegetables, fresh salads, or as a vibrant centerpiece on your next charcuterie board.

Do I really need to let it marinate overnight?

While you can enjoy it after just an hour in the fridge, letting it sit overnight allows the garlic, herbs, and citrus to truly infuse into the cheese and oil for the best possible flavor.

What should I do with the leftover oil once the feta is gone?

Don’t throw it out! The remaining garlic- and herb-infused olive oil makes a fantastic dressing for grain bowls, a dip for crusty bread, or a flavorful cooking oil for roasted vegetables.
